B Basketball - 400 Wins for Knights' Sanders

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

After the Knights fell behind 10-0, Preston (15-3) got back into the game with a full-court press and by dominating the boards. Preston went on to beat East Fairmont 58-41. The Knights scored just six points in the first quarter before coming out and tallying 24 points in the second quarter. T.J. Thompson and Colton Goff finished with 13 points and eight rebounds apiece for the Knights.

Juniors Shayne Murray and Clint Wagner added 10 points each, Cody Thompson 7, James Crogan 3, and Bronson Contic had 2 points.

Preston Knight Coach Barry Sanders recorded his 400th win this evening and is most proud of the fact that all of his victories have come in Preston County Schools. Coach Sanders grew up in Terra Alta (Preston County) and has coached for 26 years in Preston County. He spent his first eight seasons at Class A East Preston High School and the past 18 at Preston High School - after county consolidation in 1991.

"Sanders' yell is a trademark. There's also the Sanders stomp".

"You better be in the right place on the court when he stomps," senior T.J. Thompson said.

And then there's Sanders yelling for his players to "pooosh", not push the ball up the court.

Sanders said, "I had such great assistants and so many good kids over the years. That means a lot."

"We know he expects a lot from us," T.J. Thompson added. "He pushes us hard, but he's always pushed his teams hard. That's the thing with Coach, he's going to get the most out of you no matter what the record is. He's a pretty cool guy."

In JV action, Preston (8-6) defeated East Fairmont 87-71 with several Knights scoring in double figures. Freshman Mitchell Koch led the team with 26 points, followed by Junior R.T. Goff with 22. Also contributing was Freshman Wesley Scott with 12, Junior Derek Johnson with 11, and Sophomore Bryant Western with 10 points.
